How to Find and Delete Duplicate Photos and Files on Mac

Remove duplicate photos with the Photos Duplicates album, then find duplicate files anywhere else on your Mac — safely, keeping one copy.

Quick answer

For photos in your Photos library, open Photos, select Duplicates under Utilities in the sidebar and click Merge — macOS keeps the best-quality copy and combines their details. For duplicate files outside Photos (Downloads, Documents, external drives), use a hash-based duplicate finder such as MacDiskCleaner, which compares file contents, not just names, and moves extra copies to the Trash.

Duplicates are one of the easiest ways to recover space safely: by definition, you still have a copy. The right tool depends on where they are.

Why duplicates happen

  • Importing the same photos from a phone, camera or card more than once.
  • Downloading the same attachment several times (file (1).pdf, file (2).pdf).
  • Copying folders to reorganise them and never deleting the originals.
  • Syncing from several devices or cloud services into the same Mac.

Part 1: Duplicate photos in the Photos app

Photos has a built-in duplicate detector (macOS Ventura and later).

  1. Open Photos.
  2. In the sidebar, under Utilities, select Duplicates.
  3. Review each group, then click Merge for one group, or select several and choose Merge Items.

Photos keeps the best-quality version, combines albums, keywords and captions, and moves the extra copies to Recently Deleted, where they stay for 30 days.

If the Duplicates album doesn’t appear: Photos detects duplicates in the background, which can take hours or days after an update or a big import. Leave Photos open with your Mac plugged in.

Note: Photos only looks inside your Photos library — not at copies of the same pictures in Downloads, Desktop or an external drive.

Part 2: Duplicate files everywhere else

Finder has no duplicate search, and searching by name is unreliable: renamed copies are missed and different files with the same name are flagged. Reliable duplicate finders compare file contents using a hash (a fingerprint of the data).

MacDiskCleaner works this way: it groups files with identical contents, shows each copy’s location, size and date, and pre-selects the extra copies while keeping one. Everything you remove goes to the Trash, so you can put it back. The duplicate scan is part of the free tier.

Do it in one scan with MacDiskCleaner

Finds junk, duplicates and large files across your Mac, shows everything for free, and moves what you choose to the Trash first — so nothing is lost by mistake.

Safe removal checklist

  1. Keep the copy in the place you actually use (for example Documents, not Downloads).
  2. Don’t delete inside libraries — Photos, Music, iMovie or Final Cut libraries manage their own files. Use the app instead.
  3. Skip app bundles and system folders. Identical files inside apps are normal.
  4. Check cloud folders (iCloud Drive, Dropbox, Google Drive): deleting there deletes on every device.
  5. Empty the Trash only once you’re sure — that’s when the space is actually freed.

Similar vs. duplicate photos

Duplicate means identical (or near-identical in Photos’ case). Similar photos — bursts, several shots of the same scene — aren’t duplicates, and deciding which to keep is a personal choice. Review those by hand in the Photos library.

Frequently asked questions

Does Photos on Mac find duplicates?

Yes. Since macOS Ventura, Photos detects duplicate photos and videos and lists them in the Duplicates album under Utilities in the sidebar. It can take a while to appear after updating or importing.

What happens when I merge duplicates in Photos?

Photos keeps the highest-quality version, combines relevant data such as albums, captions and keywords, and moves the other copies to the Recently Deleted album for 30 days.

How do I find duplicate files outside Photos?

Use a duplicate finder that compares file contents (hashes). Finder can’t find duplicates by content; searching by name misses renamed copies and flags different files with the same name.

Is it safe to delete duplicate files on Mac?

Yes, if the files are byte-for-byte identical and you keep one copy. Be careful with duplicates inside app bundles, libraries (Photos, Music) and system folders — delete those through the owning app instead.
