One download. Every Mac.

MacDiskCleaner ships as a single universal app compiled natively for both Apple Silicon and Intel — no version to pick, it just runs fast on whichever Mac you have.

RECOMMENDED — INSTALLS WITH NO macOS WARNING

Install from Terminal

Because MacDiskCleaner isn't on the App Store, macOS shows a warning the first time you open an app downloaded in a browser. This one command skips that: it downloads the latest version, checks its published checksum, installs it in Applications and opens it.

curl -fsSL https://www.macdiskcleaner.com/install.sh | bash
Open Terminal (Applications → Utilities), paste, press Return.View the script

Prefer a regular download?

Download the .dmg

Same universal file for Apple Silicon and Intel. macOS shows a one-time warning before the first launch — here is exactly how to get past it.

"Apple could not verify this app…"

This is expected for the .dmg download — MacDiskCleaner isn't on the App Store, so macOS asks you to confirm the very first launch. It only happens once.

If the warning only offers "Move to Bin": close it with the other button — don't click Move to Bin, the download is fine. Then follow the steps below.

macOS 15 Sequoia or later

  1. Open MacDiskCleaner once; on the warning, click Done (not Move to Bin).
  2. Open System Settings → Privacy & Security.
  3. Scroll down, click Open Anyway next to MacDiskCleaner, then confirm with your password.

macOS 14 Sonoma

  1. Right-click (or Control-click) MacDiskCleaner in Applications.
  2. Choose Open.
  3. Click Open again in the dialog.
Already downloaded the .dmg? Clear the warning from Terminal

Paste this once, then open the app normally:

xattr -dr com.apple.quarantine /Applications/MacDiskCleaner.app

Once past this one-time check, future updates install from inside the app with no warning. You can verify your download with its published checksum on the safety page. Verify checksum →

System requirements

  • macOS 14 Sonoma or later
  • Apple Silicon (M1 or newer) or Intel processor

Frequently asked questions

Is the download free?

Yes. The download is free and the free tier never expires: scan everything and clean up to 2 GB in total at no cost. Pro is an optional $12.99 one-time upgrade.

Which version do I need for an M-series or Intel Mac?

There is only one. The app is a universal binary with native code for Apple Silicon and Intel, so the same download runs natively on both.

Why does macOS warn me when I open it?

macOS shows that warning for apps downloaded in a browser that are not distributed through the App Store. It is a one-time confirmation; the Terminal install above avoids it entirely, and the published SHA-256 checksum lets you verify the file.

How do I update MacDiskCleaner?

The app checks for updates automatically and installs them in one click from inside the app, so you never need to download it again from the website.

How do I uninstall it?

Quit the app and drag MacDiskCleaner from Applications to the Trash. Its settings live in ~/Library/Application Support/MacStorageOptimizer and can be removed the same way.
