Mac Storage Full? How to Fix “Your Disk Is Almost Full”

Mac says your disk is almost full? Find what’s really using space, free some up now, deal with System Data and stop it filling up again.

Quick answer

When your Mac says the disk is almost full, first empty the Trash and restart. Then open System Settings → General → Storage, delete large files and old downloads from Documents → Large Files, remove old iPhone backups, and clear caches. If System Data is huge, check Time Machine snapshots, device backups and Xcode. Keep 15–20% of the disk free to avoid the warning returning.

“Your disk is almost full” rarely says what is full. Here’s how to diagnose it properly and get space back — fast first, thorough second.

Free space right now (2 minutes)

  1. Empty the Trash: ⇧ ⌘ ⌫ in Finder.
  2. Quit apps you’re not using, especially browsers with many tabs and video editors.
  3. Restart. This clears swap and temporary files, which can be several gigabytes on a nearly full disk.

If you still have less than about 10 GB free, delete a few big files from Downloads before continuing.

Step 1: See what macOS thinks is using space

Open System Settings → General → Storage. The coloured bar shows the main categories: Applications, Documents, Photos, iCloud Drive, Mail, Messages, macOS and System Data. Click the ⓘ next to each one to see and delete its contents.

Step 2: Remove large files and old downloads

Under Documents, open Large Files and Downloads. Old installers, videos and archives are the quickest wins. Guide: find large files on Mac.

Step 3: Check iOS files and Messages

  • iOS Files lists iPhone and iPad backups and software updates stored on your Mac — delete old ones.
  • Messages can hold gigabytes of photos and videos; in Messages → Settings → General, set Keep messages to 1 year or 30 days if you’re happy to.

Step 4: Deal with System Data

If System Data is very large, the usual causes are Time Machine local snapshots, device backups, developer data or a virtual machine. Read why System Data gets so big and the step-by-step fix.

Do it in one scan with MacDiskCleaner

Step 5: Uninstall apps you don’t use

Under Applications, sort by size and remove what you no longer need, then delete the app’s leftover folders in ~/Library/Application Support.

Understand purgeable space

Storage sometimes shows purgeable space. That’s data macOS will delete by itself when it needs room — local copies of iCloud files, old snapshots and some caches. You don’t need to do anything about it.

Keep it from filling up again

  • Turn on Empty Trash Automatically in Storage recommendations.
  • Move finished projects and old photos to an external drive.
  • Keep 15–20% of your disk free — macOS uses it for virtual memory and updates.
  • Run a cleanup scan every month or two. MacDiskCleaner shows where space went since last time, and Pro can scan on a schedule.

How much space should cleaning recover?

That depends on the Mac. One with years of downloads, device backups or developer tools often has tens of gigabytes to reclaim. A free MacDiskCleaner scan tells you the real number for your Mac before you spend time on manual cleanup.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my Mac say storage is full when I deleted files?

Deleted files stay in the Trash until it’s emptied, and the Storage view can take a few minutes to update. Time Machine local snapshots can also hold deleted data until macOS purges them.

What is purgeable space on a Mac?

Space used by items macOS can remove automatically when needed — for example iCloud files that are already in the cloud or old snapshots. You don’t need to delete it manually.

What happens if my Mac’s storage is completely full?

Apps can crash, files may fail to save, macOS updates won’t install and the Mac slows down because it has no room for virtual memory. Free some space as soon as you can.

How do I stop my Mac storage from filling up?

Turn on Empty Trash Automatically, store Desktop and Documents in iCloud if you use it, clear Downloads regularly, and run a cleanup scan every month or two.
